Northern was founded in 2005 as a small, dynamic Oslo-based company specialised in the design and manufacture of lamps. Later the agency added furniture and interior accessories to their portfolio. Northern is a young, playful and mood orientated company: it represents and promotes the joy of creative design and Nordic geographical and cultural heritage within the international design scene.


Northern produces the work of both up- and-coming talents and well-known names. Designed with the potential to make any setting unique, Northern’s products add atmosphere as they reveal a new vision for Nordic style.

Dahl’s seamless curves and crisp, white surfaces may seem completely contemporary, but this classic design has a long and illustrious past. Dahl was originally created in 1956 and installed in the newly-renovated Norwegian Parliament building two years later. The light was reintroduced by Northern in 2016, following the relaunch of Birger Dahl’s classic Dokka and Birdy designs. For decades, Dahl’s smooth shape and soft contours have blended effortlessly into modern interiors and created a focal point that illuminates the room.

It was Norwegian design duo Morten & Jonas’ fascination with quarries, and the imprint left on the landscape from extracting the stone, that inspired their Monolith Candle Holder.

The new Tradition Pendant, from Norwegian design duo Morten & Jonas is a contemporary take on a time-honoured craft. This distinct and decorative design with its finely knitted shade will create a beautiful atmosphere, complement your décor, and enhance your experience of home. Made from off-white polyester tube, the shade is carefully stretched over its white metal frame before being fastened at the top and bottom. Northern

Birdy is a table, wall and floor lamp series designed in 1952, in a modernist style. The lamp series was produced and sold by the Norwegian electricity company Sønnico (Oslo) for many years. In 1954 the table lamp, then known as “s-30016” was awarded the highly esteemed Golden Medal at the Milan Triennale.

In 2013 Northern decided to re-launch this design classic, taking care to preserve the original shape and highly functional features that at first made it such a well–loved light. The lamp series is available in white, grey or black colour with steel finish and black coloured shade with black or brass metal finish.

Birdy is also available as a floor lamp and wall lamp with short or long arm.

Birdy

Dokka is a small light with a big history. Designed in 1954, it was the first lamp from Norway to receive a Golden Medal award at the prestigious Triennale di Milano. Acclaimed for its smooth contours, precise proportions and sleek handling of materials, Dokka had the potential to become a design classic from day one. It became one of the best-selling pendant lamps ever produced in Norway, then disappeared when the previous manufacturer discontinued their lighting range.


In 2007, Northern re-launched Dokka, taking care to preserve the features that made it a design classic. Today, the lamp is expertly crafted in steel or brass, and made to last. The light is available in a range of colours: black, dark grey, white, light yellow, rust red, dark green, warm beige, brushed steel and brushed brass. An icon of its time, Dokka is uniquely contemporary, and is destined to become a future antique.
