At 16 years of age, Erik Pløen became an apprentice at the ceramics workshop Schneider & Knutzen. In 1946 he established his own workshop. During the first decade, Pløen and his assistants produced decorated pottery in tin glazed earthenware. In 1957 he began working alone, focusing on artistically crafted stoneware. Pløen’s major breakthrough came with his 1959 solo exhibition at the gallery Norway Designs in Oslo. That same year he received an artist’s grant from the government, and his works were showcased by Georg Jensen Inc. in New York. From the mid-1960s he increasingly modelled vases and bowls by hand rather than using a potter’s wheel. Over time Pløen’s ceramics developed in a looser, sculptural direction
