Hermann Bongard was one of the most versatile and prolific designers Norway has ever known. With his well-developed sense of form and his deep knowledge of materials, he felt as much at home designing books and company logos as glassware and ceramics. After graduating from Statens Handverk- og Kunstindustriskole in 1941, he began designing advertisements. From 1947 he worked at Christiania Glasmagasin where he designed glass for Hadeland Glassverk. He was awarded the gold medal at the Triennale in Milan in 1954 for his wine glass and decanter set Hermann. The following year Bongard began as a freelance designer. For Figgjo Fajanse, he designed the Vulcanus range which is ovenproof and marked by the distinct A la Carte d.cor. In 1960 he was appointed artistic director of Plus, a national centre for applied arts in Fredrikstad. In the period 1964-68 he was design manager at J.W. Cappelen publishing house.
