Arne Tjomsland came to prominence in the 1950s and ’60s, acting as the leading designer of souvenirs made from wood and whale teeth. His works are characterised by remarkably high stylization and a soft, restrained line. Tjomsland started making souvenir figurines in wood in 1954. His first figure was a polar bear in teak. Demand became so great that the producer, Hiorth & Østlyngen, eventually serialised production. Tjomsland’s figures were included in the exhibition Design in Scandinavia, which travelled throughout the USA and Canada between 1954-57. In 1957 he became artistic director for Goodwill Products, a company that produced his figures in both wood and whale teeth. Tjomsland mostly designed figurines based on Scandinavian fauna, but also delved into Eskimo and Viking themes.
1950〜60年代に活躍したアルネ・テョムスランは、木や クジラの歯からつくったオブジェで知られるデザイナーです。簡略化された柔らかなラインで高い様式美を表現 した彼は、木製人形の製作を54年にスタート。最初の 作品はチーク材でつくったクマの置物でした。ヨルト& ウストリンゲンがシリーズものをつくり始めてからはオーダー も増え、54〜57年にかけてアメリカやカナダで開催された「Design in Scandinavia」内で展示しています。57年 以降は、Goodwill Productsのアートディレクターとし て、木やクジラの歯による作品をつくり続けます。テョムスラン の作品には、北欧の動物やエスキモー、バイキングを モチーフにしたものが多く見られました。
