Arne Jon Jutrem was appointed artistic director of the sand-blowing workshop at Hadeland Glassverk when he was only 21 years old. Along with Hermann Bongard and Willy Johansson, he invigorated the company’s product line and raised its artistic quality. Jutrem designed a great deal of art glass, including the commercially successful Grønland series that won the gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954. Jutrem worked as a freelance designer for the Danish glassworks Holmegaard in 1963-66. For the world exhibition Expo 67 in Montreal, he collaborated with Tormod Alnæs to create a furniture set in steel, glass and plexiglas. Jutrem’s later works bear witness to a free, sculptural approach to glass as an artistic medium.
