Tone Vigeland is Norway’s most influential jewellery designer. In 1958 she began as an apprentice in the silver studio at the applied arts centre Plus in Fredrikstad. She soon had her artistic breakthrough with the innovative ear jewellery Sling, one of the most notable Norwegian design classics of the twentieth century. Typical for Vigeland’s jewellery from the early 1960s is a simple, clear form, well adapted to rational, hand-crafted serial production. In 1967 she designed jewellery in an Op Art style, with obvious references to modern art. Vigeland’s jewellery designs have strong sculptural qualities. Her recent pieces have rich sensual surfaces that enable an advanced play of light. With her innovative jewellery, Vigeland has gained an international reputation, and her works can be found in renowned collections worldwide.
