Arne Korsmo was one of Norway’s most prominent architects from 1930 to 1960. While designing several buildings characterised by a distinctly functionalistic style, he also had a well-developed eye for decoration. Starting in 1947, he worked either alone or with his wife Grete Prytz Kittelsen to design works in silver and enamel for the goldsmithing company J. Tostrup. That same year he also started developing the cutlery set Korsmo (Korsmoplett), which was stamped in sheet metal, then covered in silver plating. At the Triennale di Milano in 1954, Korsmo won the grand prize for his design of the Norwegian exhibition, and a gold medal for the Korsmo cutlery series. As a teacher at Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole in Oslo and professor at Norges Tekniske Høgskole in Trondheim (the Norwegian Institute of Technology, NTH), Korsmo played a decisive role in Norway’s development in the post-World War II era.
