William Knutzen
1913 - 1983In 1934, while a student at Statens Håndverk- og Kunstindustriskole, Knutzen established his own ceramics workshop in Oslo. In 1937 he went into partnership with Andreas Thiele Schneider. They founded Schneider & Knutzen, with Knutzen as the artistic impetus. The same year Knutzen exhibited his work in the Norwegian pavilion at the Exposition Internationale in Paris. Around 1940 he began working frequently with chamotte pottery, using coarse, elegantly etched patterns and bold colours on cream white tin glaze. In the period 1946-49 Knutzen was artistic director of the ceramics department at Graveren. Whilst establishing his new workshop in 1949, he became artistic director of the Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker in Halden. Knutzen’s works from the early 1950s are characterised by experimental, abstract forms in partially glazed red clay. His later production was marked by a stronger narrative character, with obvious references to older ceramics.
1934年、国立工芸美術大学の学生でありながら、オスロに自身の工房を構えたヴィリアム・クヌッツェン。37年に アンドレアス・ティエーレ・シュナイダーと二人でシュナイダー&クヌッツェンを設立し、クヌッツェンは芸術的表現にさらに力を入れるようになります。同年、パリ万国博覧会のノルウェー館に参加。40年からはシャモット煉瓦の窯で、洗練されたパターンとクリーム色のベースにはっきりとした彩色を施したファイアンス焼きに取り組んでいます。4 6〜 4 9年にかけて、Graverenの陶器部門のアートディレクターに就任。49年に新しい工房をオープン させると、ハルデンのArnold Wiigs Fabrikkerのアートディレクションを担当します。50年を過ぎてからは、彼の作風は次第に実験的かつ抽象的になっていき、晩年 には古い陶芸に思いを馳せた、物語性の強い作品を発表しています。
