Kåre Berven Fjeldsaa was an innovator of Norwegian studio pottery. He received a thorough education during his apprenticeship with the ceramic artist Jens von der Lippe. Fjeldsaa established a workshop at Blommenholm in Bærum in 1947. The first years he worked with hand-modelled ceramic sculptures that were glazed with tin oxide and fired at low temperatures. Around 1950, Fjeldsaa approached his designs more abstractly, experimenting with high-fired, sintered ceramics. His forms were now more sculptural, yet still functional. Fjeldsaa won two gold medals, first at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and then at the international ceramics exhibition Exposition Internationale in Cannes in 1955. Two years later he became both a designer and the artistic director for Stavangerflint, where he focused largely on tableware. In addition, he was commissioned to create ceramic reliefs for public edifices.
