Studio Else & Paul
1959The jewellery workshop studio Else & Paul was established in 1959 at Gran in Hadeland by Else Berntsen Hughes and Paul Hughes. Their casting technique resulted in works that were more sculptural and expressive than that of most other Norwegian jewellery designers in the 1960s. They had many sources for inspiration: Celtic and Norse jewellery, abstract modern art, African masks and American crafts, among others. In 1962 Studio Else & Paul moved to Oslo and began making designs for serially-produced, easily affordable jewellery that could appeal to a large market. Studio Else & Paul built an extensive export market, enjoying particular success with jewellery in bronze and oxidised silver.
