Gerhard Berg
1927Awards:
- 1958 – 2nd prize, Askim Rubber Factory competition
While Gerhard Berg finished his degree at Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole in 1953, he worked briefly for Ingmar Relling. In 1954 he was employed as a draftsman at Vatne Lenestolfabrikk, tasked to refresh the company’s furniture collection. While there, Berg designed furniture marked by soft, organic forms – including the Florida Jr. chair and the section couch Varia. Berg’s interest in the use of new materials in the furniture industry is reflected in his experimentation with fibreglass. From the mid-1950s, Berg designed furniture for many different manufacturers. For L.K. Hjelle he designed the Norse series, and for P.I. Langlo the 1800, which reflects a distinct Japanese influence. Stokke produced several of Berg’s furniture classics, including the armchairs Aksla and Classic and the Kubus furniture series.
