Gine Sommerfelt

1939
EN

At the age of 15, Gine Sommerfelt left home to become an apprentice at the goldsmithing firm J. Tostrup in Oslo. After receiving her journeyman certificate, she went to New York in 1960, working as a trainee designer at Oneida Ltd. for 18 months. Sommerfelt then returned to Oslo in 1962 and was hired as a designer at J. Tostrup. In 1964 she set up her own shop. Her jewellery pieces from the 1960s and ’70s are characterised by a refined sense of form, often inspired by geometrical shapes in a typically Scandinavian manner. When designing her early jewellery, she tended to pay attention to contemporary fashion and the sensibilities of youth culture. In recent years, Sommerfelt has designed jewellery using trilobites and other fossils.
