Arne F. Tidemand Ruud remains a somewhat unexplored character in the history of recent Norwegian furniture design. His father, Ole N. Ruud, managed furniture factories in the Norwegian cities of Oslo and Gjøvik, and in Odense, Denmark. The factories delivered furniture and interiors to the ships serving the Norwegian American Line. Tidemand Ruud was a carpentry apprentice at his father’s factories and received his journeyman certificate in 1935. He continued working at the family firm until 1953, when, upon his father’s death, he assumed management of AS Inventar at Gjøvik. He ran the factory jointly with his wife Solveig, a professional fabrics designer. For three decades they designed and produced furniture and interiors for cafes, restaurants, banks and hotels. His most famous work is the reclining chair Holmenkollen from 1959, made in teak and leather. Holmenkollen was primarily sold in the USA, Germany and Sweden via the Norcraft export scheme.
アルネ・ティーデマン・ルッドは、ノルウェーの家具デザイン の歴史のなかで、あまり多く語られていない人物です。オスロ、オーデンセ、ヨーヴィクに家具工場を持っていた 父、オーレ・N.・ルッドは、ノルウェーとアメリカを結ぶ船 の家具や室内装飾を手がけていました。父の元で修行すると共に、国立美術工芸大学に通い、1935年に職人認定 を受けます。53年まで家業に従事していましたが、父の 死後、ヨーヴィクのAS Inventar社のマネージャーに就 任。ファブリックデザイナーだった妻のソルヴィーグとと もに工房を運営しながら、30年に渡りカフェやレストラン、銀行、ホテルといったさまざまな施設の内装を担当しま した。彼の代表作としては、59年に発表したチークに革 張りしたリクライニングチェア〈Holmenkollen〉があり、同作は翌年にケルン国際家具見本市で優勝しています。 〈Homenkollen〉は、Norcraft社を通して輸出され、アメリカやドイツ、スウェーデンなどでも販売されていました。
